Roma Victrix (Gladiatrix #2) by Russell Whitfield
Throne of the Caesars: Sep 09, Jim rated it liked it. Valerian, a practical and sound-minded lifer in the Roman army, is vladiatrix prisoner and, let’s just say, not treated very well.
As a mix of fact in a lot of fiction, the book did bring up interesting points about the role of women in Roman society, the interactions between Roman and Greek cultures, and the impact of Roman expansion on captured slaves that I have not encountered in fiction before.
Despite her most Spartan emotionless ethic, Lysandra’s overprotection and love of Varia pushes her away. Don’t want to give anything away! Though this book did fufull its promise of almost non-stop action, it did have some scenes that I would have never expected and really struggled to get past to finish the rest of the book. The story’s pace is torrid as each gladiatrix is pushed to her max in preparation for their Colosseum battle before Emperor Domitian.

It is not just the interactions between individual characters which stirred me, there are also fierce interactions between the races too.
En route, they serve as the protective older brothers to a sister who’s really in no need of protection and never accepts it anyway. Historical Fiction at it’s best.
Why four stars not five for a book this good – this is my protest at the unnecessary sex that really seems to have been put in at the publishers insistence. Roma Victrix was very different and I defintely did appreciate the changes. I was pleased to get the next installment and was not disappointed. In fact, if the story of the training itself hadn’t been so fascinating, I’d have tossed the book aside in disgust! As soon as Roma Victrix graced the local book store shelves I ran out to buy it knowing as any fan of Whitfield that I was going to spend some late hours reading.

Phrases like “spun about”, page 4, could’ve been better. Overall, if you enjoy a story that has a strong female hero with an interesting backround that rises out of oppression and into the place of one of Romes greatest icons, then you’ll love Gladiatrix.
She even goes to a dinner with the Roman Governor knowing full well what might be expected of her.
